Samsung S20 Review And Comparison

The New Samsung S20 Launch and how it compares to iPhone 11

With the ever-increasing influx on premium smartphones flooding the market we’re going to have a look at the key features of Samsung’s new S20 models and do a little comparison with the current iPhone 11 family. Sometimes the subtle differences in the naming convention can be a tad confusing – when you’re considering a new device it’s key to note which of the new tech you’re actually paying for and whether it will be a worthwhile investment for your business.

Samsung S20 Ultra – The Big Daddy of the Family

Samsung is just about to launch the S20, S20+ & S20 Ultra (another new name to contend with!).

So what’s to say about this new Ultra version? In a nutshell the Ultra is big in every way. It produces 108MP photos, has a 100x camera zoom, creates 40MP selfies, and has a 6.9-inch 120Hz display. With that, it also has internal specs on a par with laptops, meaning you’ll pay more for this phone than any non-foldable phone before it, but that’s not surprising given the amount of development that’s gone into the tech spec upgrades.

Early reviews by the mobile press mention some bugs that have cropped up, mainly some inconsistencies in the camera quality, which Samsung promises will be ironed out in future software releases. Even so, it’s Samsung’s best quality display yet, has confirmed 5G speeds and impressive camera zoom range, but you will need big hands!

For business users we’d only recommend investing in this top end model if you’re also using it as a personal phone and you’ll take advantage of some of the more consumer focused upgrades (unless photography is big for your business of course).

S20

The Samsung Galaxy S20 skips a whole load of numbers from last year’s S10, but there is good reason for that: it’s a considerable upgrade if you’re keen on a 5G phone. It’s cheaper and smaller than the Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra, but far from what you’d call a cheap or small phone.

The phone has a 6.2-inch screen with a fast 120Hz refresh rate, 5G download speeds, better cameras on the front and back and decent battery capacity.

This is the phone to pick if you want to try out the new tech that Samsung has to offer. You could go for the Ultra if you want more storage or a 108MP camera, but for day-to-day use, the S20 is going to be fine for most people.

S20 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is the successor to the S10 Plus, and this version packs a bigger display, better cameras, more battery life and fast 5G speeds. It’s outclassed by the new Galaxy S20 Ultra, so it’s no longer Samsung’s biggest, but it may be the best fit for those of you who don’t want to pay the extra or have a phone that large in their hand.

Price Points & Business Contracts

All of these models are top end devices with top end prices, The S20 is retailing at around £900 SIM free with the Plus variant £100 more. Expect to pay £1200 for the entry level Ultra though. If you are due an upgrade anytime soon on your business contract we can talk you through your options, and of course we have handset leasing plans which spread the cost of the device and keep the cost separate from your airtime if that’s what you’d prefer.

S20 range vs iPhone 11

Apple’s flagship iPhone 11 range consists of the iPhone 11, 11 Pro & 11 Pro Max. Apple have opted for two size variants of the highest spec phone whereas Samsung have created their two size variants at the entry level of the family with just the Plus option in the Ultra.

The iPhone 11 Pro is Apple’s most powerful phone that comes in a one-hand-friendly size. It has a triple-lens camera to capture best-in-class photos and video from a variety of perspectives, a new night mode to enhance low-light photography and extra battery life prowess. Even if the design hasn’t changed, this is the camera and battery upgrade iPhone users have been after. The iPhone 11 is the real odd one out when it comes to cameras as it has two lenses on the back, while the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have three.

Price wise there’s almost parity now at the top end, with the iPhone 11 Pro Max retailing at £1149 SIM free, however for an extra £50 the S20 Ultra packs more punch technically. For the standard models you’re looking at paying £729 for the iPhone 11 SIM Free and £1049 for the 11 Pro.

For most people the decision to switch from iOS to Android or vice versa is quite considerable once we are familiar with an OS. The camera on the S20 Ultra is a big step forward in tech so perhaps that may tempt you…
