What’s happening?

BT Openreach will be phasing out all Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) phone networks to switch to a fully digital IP fibre network by 2027. After, every phone call you take, make or transfer will instead be routed over the Internet. Now is the time to act and get ahead of the competition before the final switch off next year.

What does this mean for my business?

The future is digital. Businesses are already moving towards telephone systems that run over IP and additional connectivity to support their communications. Your existing business fixed landline will no longer be supported soon, so you can avoid costly downtime with a cloud phone system.

FAQ’s

  • The PSTN switch-off in 2027 refers to the planned shutdown of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a traditional landline telephone system, in favour of more advanced and modern communication technologies.

  • The switch off is driven by the increasing adoption of digital communication technologies, such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and mobile networks, which offer more efficient and versatile communication options.

  • The switch off requires businesses to transition from PSTN-based communication systems to alternatives like VoIP or mobile networks. Understanding these changes is crucial for maintaining seamless communication. You can contact a member of our team to find out more about which services may be affected and how we can help you to switch them over.

  • Yes, if your business landline phone relies on the PSTN, you will need to transition to a device compatible with newer technologies, such as VoIP or mobile phones.

  • In most cases, you will need to migrate your phone number to a digital service. Your service provider should guide you through the process to ensure a seamless transition or a member of our team can take care of this.

  • Start by identifying the communication technologies you think best suit your business, ensure compatibility with existing devices, and educate yourself on the transition process, including if there will need to be any installation downtimes etc. Consider consulting with your service provider for guidance or contact a member of our team to find out more.

  • Evaluate the compatibility of your PBX system with newer technologies. In some cases, adaptations or upgrades may be possible, but a complete replacement might be necessary for optimal functionality. Complete one of our full business tariff reviews to find out more.

  • While some downtime may be inevitable during the transition, careful planning and coordination with service providers can help minimize disruptions. Consider implementing the change during non-critical business hours if possible.

  • There may be some initial upfront costs for installation and hardware, however these newer solutions are more scalable and suited to growth, making them more affordable in the long run for your business, not to mention the added productivity and efficiency benefits you will experience with new technology.

  • This should be a very positive change for your remote workers as long as you ensure that the chosen alternative communication methods are suitable for remote work. Evaluate features such as video conferencing, cloud-based collaboration tools, and other virtual communication solutions. VoIP and softphone systems can be perfect for helping hybrid and home workers have the same access to all of their required contacts, resources and apps from home.

  • Stay informed about regulatory requirements and compliance standards related to communication technologies. Ensure that the chosen alternatives meet industry-specific regulations and guidelines.

  • Reach out to your service providers, industry associations, and technology consultants for support and resources. Stay informed about updates, webinars, and training sessions that can aid in a smooth transition for your business.

  • The cost implications for your business will depend on the communication services chosen as alternatives. In some cases, newer cloud hosted technologies may offer cost savings with cheaper set up costs. However you should expect to need to buy replacement handsets, routers etc.
