Apple’s New iPhone SE

iPhone SE 2020 Launch – Pre Order from today

Whilst the world continues in lockdown, the wheels of new tech keep turning! Today the latest entry level iPhone is available to pre-order. The new iPhone SE is finally here after years of rumours! Four years has passed since the original iPhone SE launched, back when we were able to go outside without fear of coming into contact with another human! That original SE took the components of the 4.7in iPhone 6s (announced the previous September) and squished them into a smaller 4in handset modelled on the iPhone 5s.

The result was the iPhone SE: a compact iPhone that offered the same specs as Apple’s flagship model of the time at a more affordable price. It was a popular choice with consumers until Apple discontinued it in September 2018 when it launched the iPhone XR.

There had been rumours suggesting that there would be a new affordable iPhone coming from Apple, but at £749 the iPhone XR was not that phone. So, for the past year and a half the only option for those looking for a low-cost iPhone was to buy one of the previous-year’s handsets – until recently the iPhone 8. Now the iPhone 8 is no more and in its place sits the brand new iPhone SE. The second coming of Apple’s Special Edition iPhone (if you’d forgotten, that’s what SE stood for).

HERE’S WHAT APPLE HAS TO SAY ABOUT IT:

“The Most Affordable iPhone Features A13 Bionic, the Fastest Chip in a Smartphone, and the Best Single-Camera System in an iPhone.”

The new SE comes in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes and three colours — black, white and RED — and is available to pre-order from Friday 17th April. Apple go on to say:

“The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way — including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos — while still being very affordable,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can’t wait to get iPhone SE into customers’ hands.”

At first glance we’re pretty impressed with the new SE, especially as it’s a really reasonable price for an iPhone at just £351 ex VAT. So whether you choose a traditional handset and tariff plan that filly funds the cost of the hardware over 2 years, or even if you wat to invest in some SIM free devices with some lower cost SIM Only airtime plans, equipping your team with the latest iPhone is not completely out of reach.

Should I upgrade from an iPhone 8?

For the iPhone 8, it truly is a case of “here today, gone tomorrow.” If you logged onto Apple’s website a few days ago, you would have spotted the iPhone 8 occupying the space of the cheapest iPhone on sale at Apple’s online store. But on April 15th when the new SE was announced, the iPhone 8 was gone, replaced by the iPhone SE 2020. A revamped version of Apple’s much beloved compact phone from 2016, the latest iPhone SE is now the least expensive option for people who don’t want to pay top dollar for one of Apple’s iPhone 11 models

If you compare the specs you can see what good value the new SE offers:

Owners of the original iPhone SE may not like that the new phone’s screen size has creeped upward, from 4 inches to 4.7 inches. But they’ll likely be swayed by the low price tag and the fact that the new iPhone SE gives them an inexpensive way to benefit from most of the advances Apple has made with its smartphones in subsequent years

Should I buy the Apple iPhone SE 2020 or the Apple iPhone XR?

The new iPhone SE for 2020 is a very tempting buy considering its very affordable price and will especially appeal to those that still want the combination of a compact design, small screen and Home button. It’s actually quite hard to recommend the XR in 2020 with its same set of cameras and older processor. Despite having a more impressive screen, you should probably jump to the iPhone 11 if you can or wait for Apple to replace the XR with a new version.

IN SUMMARY

For Apple lovers we think this is the most exciting launch for some time – finally an affordable option for most users that embraces the majority of Apple’s tech advances of recent years within a manageable screen size with that traditional home screen button experience.
